The size, shape and position of the ears is usually genetic.
However, no-one need live in the anxious, self-conscious
state that is often produced by a deformity or a variation
of what is considered acceptable.
The Otoplasty procedure has been designed specifically
to correct protruding ears and is often performed on patients
as young as 18.
It is usually a day case operation, performed under Local
Anaesthetic.
During the operation the flexible cartilage structures
are altered and repositioned.
Surgical incisions are placed behind the ear where any
possible scarring will not be visible. Very occasionally
external incisions are required and these can be placed
inconspicuously within the normal contours. A care dressing
is applied to protect the ears and minimise swelling and
to allow comfortable sleep after surgery. This is worn for
3-7 days depending on the Surgeon's instructions.
The sutures are normally dissolvable and we usually see
the patient again after 7 days to ensure all is well.
